How to Open a Stock Connect Account as a Foreign Investor

Stock Connect is the most practical route for individual and institutional investors to access China’s A-share market without navigating the full QFII application process. This guide covers exactly what you need to do.

What Is Stock Connect?

Stock Connect is a cross-boundary investment channel that allows investors in Hong Kong, Macau, and overseas to trade eligible Shanghai (SSE) and Shenzhen (SZSE) listed stocks through their existing Hong Kong brokerage accounts. There is no separate regulatory approval required — if you have a Hong Kong brokerage account, you can trade A-shares.

Two links operate in parallel:

  • Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect (launched 2014): access to ~1,000 SSE-listed stocks
  • Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect (launched 2016): access to ~1,000 SZSE-listed stocks

Step 1: Open a Hong Kong Brokerage Account

You need a brokerage account with a firm that offers Stock Connect access. Major providers include:

  • Interactive Brokers (widely used by international investors, competitive fees)
  • Futu/Moomoo (Hong Kong-headquartered, strong China market coverage)
  • Tiger Brokers
  • HSBC, Standard Chartered, or other international banks with HK brokerage arms

Documentation required (varies by broker):

  • Valid passport
  • Proof of address (utility bill or bank statement, typically within 3 months)
  • Bank account details for settlement
  • Tax residency declaration (for US persons, W-8BEN or W-9 as applicable)

Processing time is typically 1-5 business days for online applications.

Step 2: Fund Your Account

Stock Connect operates in Hong Kong dollars (HKD), which are then converted to Chinese yuan (CNY) for settlement. Most brokers handle this conversion automatically at the prevailing spot rate plus a small spread.

The minimum account balance varies by broker. For Interactive Brokers, there is no minimum balance requirement, though margin accounts have different requirements.

Step 3: Understand the Eligible Stock Universe

Not all A-shares are accessible through Stock Connect. Eligible stocks are those included in the SSE 180 Index, SSE 380 Index, and certain other criteria. In practice, this covers the largest and most liquid A-share names — approximately 2,000 stocks representing the majority of market capitalization.

You can find the current eligible stock list on the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX) website, updated daily.

Step 4: Place Orders

Orders are placed through your broker’s standard interface, just like ordering any other stock. The key operational difference is that A-share trading runs on Beijing time (9:30am–11:30am, 1:00pm–3:00pm), and orders must be placed within these windows.

Important: Stock Connect uses a “day-end” settlement (T+1 for northbound), which differs from some other markets. Ensure your account has sufficient settled funds before placing trades.

Step 5: Understand Tax Implications

The tax treatment of A-share gains varies by jurisdiction:

  • Capital gains: Currently exempt for foreign investors on Stock Connect (as of 2026, subject to change)
  • Dividends: Subject to 10% withholding tax at source (reduced rates may apply under tax treaties)
  • Home country reporting: You remain responsible for declaring gains in your country of tax residence

Consult a tax advisor familiar with cross-border investment before establishing significant positions.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  1. Currency timing: CNY/HKD conversion adds a currency layer to your returns. Factor this into performance measurement
  2. Holiday calendars: A-share markets close for Chinese national holidays; plan orders accordingly
  3. Aggregate quota monitoring: Stock Connect has daily aggregate quota limits. On rare high-volume days, the northbound quota fills — check HKEX data before placing large orders in strong market conditions
  4. Short selling restrictions: Short selling of A-shares via Stock Connect is not permitted

Stock Connect is the most accessible on-ramp for A-share exposure. The mechanics are straightforward once you have the right brokerage relationship in place.
